The Perks of Being a Wallflower: group discussion

Colleen, Jaime and I discussed the book, The Perks of Being a Wallflower. In our discussion we all believed that the main character, Charlie, was quite possibly on the Autism Spectrum from the way he talked and behaved in the book.  We also believed that the female characters in the novel were all flawed in some way.

In our discussion the realization came up that there were many hot button topics that were encountered by different characters, but that for the most part, those topics were skimmed over and not delved into deeply.  For example, Charlie’s older sister was verbally abusive towards the boy who adored her, but it wasn’t until he hit her that she fell in love with him.

Another aspect we discussed was Charlie’s teacher, Bill.  Why would he invite Charlie to his apartment?  In this day and age, the likelihood of this happening is slim because of the potential liability this type of relationship outside of school could have.

We felt that the ending was rather vague and unsatisfactory, as Charlie realized his aunt had sexually molested him, but this aspect was very superficially dealt with.
